Meet Phyllis.

As a credentialed Education Specialist, Phyllis has devoted her professional career to supporting and empowering people with unique learning profiles. She has been working with students of all ages for over 30 years.

Coaching students and adults with learning differences to achieve their full potential led Phyllis to found Picture What's Next, her educational consulting practice. At Picture What's Next, Phyllis has taken her knowledge of how people learn and created personalized instructional programs based on each individual's unique learning profile. Through this process, she works one-on-one to assess her clients’ values, interests, and passions. Using a variety of different assessments and strategies to coach each person toward their educational and career goals. Working within the GS 120 system, Phyllis provides individuals valid and reliable information to help create a roadmap for the next several years based on their strengths, interests, and long-term academic and career goals.

The Work That Got Her Here:

Phyllis graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BS in Education. She received her MA from the University of Maryland in Special Education. Phyllis has California Special Education Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe, and Multiple Subject (K-8) credentials. She also has certifications in Assistive Technology and California Teachers of English Learners. In her capacity a teacher across different school settings, Phyllis has written Individualized Education Programs, designed accommodations and modifications, created behavior intervention plans, and developed comprehensive transition plans for students with Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disabilities and Orthopedic Impairments. 

In addition to her years of providing instruction to students, in 2010 Phyllis co-authored the High Tech High Education Specialist Intern Program, in which aspiring teachers obtain their teaching credential while working in the field with students. Throughout Phyllis’ career, she has devoted her time to mentoring interns and newly credentialed teachers entering the field of special education. As a result of her passion for mentoring teachers, Phyllis accepted the role of Special Education Coordinator at Thrive Public Schools and oversaw the Special Education Department at multiple school sites. She has been a course instructor and supervisor at the San Diego County Office of Education, University of San Diego, San Diego State University, and High-Tech High Charter Schools, preparing new teachers who are completing their course of study to become special education teachers.
